Thessaloniki is a stunningly beautiful modern city on the shores of the Thermaic Gulf, sprawling amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Chortiatis. This northern capital of Greece boasts a rich history spanning over 2,300 years, where historical landmarks are literally intertwined with the urban fabric.
"Every stone in Thessaloniki carries centuries of history."
"If you want to get to know the soul of Northern Greece, start in Thessaloniki."
Thessalonikia was the daughter of Philip II and his wife (or concubine) Nikisipolis, originally from the Thessalian city of Thera, whom the Macedonian king brought to him after the joint victory of the Macedonians and Thessalians over the Theran tyrants and their Phocian allies during the Third Sacred War (356–346 BC). In memory of this event, their daughter was named Thessalonikia: "Thessalonikia Niki", which in Greek means "victory of the Thessalians".
Today, the capital of Northern Greece boasts, above all, a well-developed public and tourist infrastructure, affordable prices and a wide transport network covering every corner of the city. In addition to public transport, including bus line no. 22, "Let's go to the Upper Town!", there are also open-top tourist buses and a tourist train on wheels, as well as the "Cultural Line" (bus no. 50), which offers a unique opportunity to explore the main attractions of Thessaloniki, including historical monuments and sites, with stops in the city center and at the White Tower.
"Every flavor in Thessaloniki has a story to tell you."
